On Friday, Rishabh Pant, India's prominent wicketkeeper-batter, shared a celebratory video from the festivities following India's triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. The clip features Rohit Sharma, the captain of the ODI team, humorously discussing his retirement from the 50-over format.
India secured the championship in Dubai, overcoming New Zealand by four wickets, marking the nation's second consecutive ICC trophy after their T20 World Cup victory in 2024.
Rohit Sharma's Light-hearted Comment
In his Instagram post, Rishabh Pant highlighted Rohit Sharma's playful remark: "Retirement lelu? Har baar jeetega toh mai thodi retirement leta rahunga," which translates to, "Retirement? I'm not going to retire every time I win."
Rohit Sharma's Retirement Announcement
Rohit had previously announced his retirement from T20 cricket following India's T20 World Cup 2024 win in June. In the Champions Trophy final of 2025, he was instrumental, scoring 76 runs off 83 balls, which included seven fours and three sixes.
Independence Day Wishes
Pant also shared a heartfelt message in the video, celebrating India's 79th Independence Day, stating, "Happy Independence Day, India. Some moments stay with you forever, and winning for India is at the top of the list. Proud to be Indian."
Shubman Gill's Independence Day Message
Indian Test captain Shubman Gill also conveyed his wishes on this significant day, expressing, "The biggest dream, the greatest privilege - playing for India. Happy Independence Day."
Gill's Record-Breaking Performance
Recently, Gill was honored as the ICC Men's Player of the Month for July 2025 due to his outstanding performance against England in the Test series. He was named Player of the Series after scoring an impressive 754 runs at an average of 75.40 across five Tests, which included four centuries.
This recognition marks Gill's fourth Player of the Month award from the ICC, having previously won in February this year, as well as in January and September 2023.
